πrate

A computational thought experiment in information, coincidence and randomness.

Randomness has an uncanny ability to feel personal.

Borges imagined an infinite library containing every possible book. The Infinite Monkey Theorem suggests that limitless randomness can eventually produce every possible story. Information theory reminds us that stories, photographs, software and passwords are ultimately just different representations of information.

Reading about these ideas led me to a simple question:

What happens when a random sequence starts producing information that feels personally meaningful?

πrate explores that question by treating the decimal expansion of π less like a mathematical constant and more like an immense search space, inviting people to discover familiar things they care about hidden within its digits.

The interesting part isn't whether something familiar can be found. It's how people react when it is. A birthday feels delightful. A password feels unsettling. Nothing about the search changes, only our interpretation of the result does.

The project became an exploration of perception as much as information.
